Trust in the Lord with All Your Heart

Written by Vickie Wojciechowski, Covenant Companion

When my future husband Paul joined the Air force, while in basic training, we would send love letters almost daily to one another.  It was such a wonderful and comforting feeling to experience such love through those letters; as if he was close beside me even though he was far away.  So close that I could hear his voice through the letters.

I experience a similar sense when I read scripture. While through life’s challenges and struggles there are times of feeling lost and alone, taking the time to meditate with scripture, I experience the beautiful closeness of a love letter that God has written to us.  The words of loving care that help the faithful through those rough moments in life. His presence is so close that I am assured of my every word being heard. The scripture that has continued to encourage me since I was very young is from Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths”.

Those times when I need direction or understanding I am reminded of this verse.  Trusting that together we’ll make a way through those rough patches.

Recently at a Franciscan retreat during a time of quiet meditation this verse came to me as it does so often. I discovered that even though I trust God with my life, there is a deeper element of that trust I hadn’t yet realized. Resting in this moment of deep trust, I discovered that by fully trusting God, we must allow ourselves to be vulnerable and truly invite God to show us the path that leads us in the right direction. What a daunting thought!

Even so, trusting deeper, I welcomed the vulnerability.  It was quite emotional initially, yet emboldened through faith and trust, I persevered through some long-procrastinated changes that held me in fear of potentially disappointing outcomes. All those moments of concern were unnecessary.   I discovered what I’ve always known. God is true to His word! Vulnerability may be frightening, yet, there’s no one to trust more completely than a God who listens and guides us through all the days of our life.
