October 2023 Collaborator: Women and Children

Through prayer, relationship-building and sharing of resources, the Wheaton Franciscans collaborate with organizations whose mission and priorities are similar to ours. We focus primarily on the following areas: care of creation; health and dental in underserved areas; refugees and immigrants; women and children in vulnerable situations; and other purposes that align with our values. We are currently connected to nearly 100 organizations.

New Moms Inc

Oak Park, IL

New Moms has been in operation for 38 years, and they have always exclusively served young moms (aged 24 and under) and their young children (typically birth-age 5). When young families come to New Moms, 97% are experiencing extreme poverty (200% or more below the federal poverty threshold), and most have no permanent home. Due to the challenges of single parenthood, nearly 50% have dropped out of school. 100% report trauma histories. The agency offers 40 apartments of transitional housing in their Transformation Center headquarters in Chicago, and 18 apartments of permanent supportive housing in their Clare Place residence in Oak Park. Additionally, the organization provides young moms with various educational and job-training programs, and employment in a candle-making business.

For it is in giving that we receive.
