Wheaton Franciscan Covenant Companions Celebrate 40 Years
September 17, 2023, marks the 40th Anniversary of Covenant Companionship. On this day in 1983, seventeen women and men made their public commitment as Covenant Companions with the Wheaton Franciscans. This public event was the culmination of many years of study, prayer, and dialogue between sisters and lay people in the area. It was a capstone on the profound transformation that had occurred in the community through the Second Vatican Council. We are grateful for the groundbreaking efforts that led to this prophetic action, especially the work of Sisters Marge Zulaski, Pat Norton, and Mary Lou Wirtz.
Since that historic day, 96 women and men have chosen to join as Covenant Companions in living the charism and spirituality of the Wheaton Franciscan community. Some have moved on, and some have passed into eternal life.
On Sunday, December 10, 2023, the Wheaton Franciscan community will celebrate the public commitment of individuals joining the current 37 Covenant Companions in walking the Franciscan Way with this community.
Covenant Companions face the future with gratitude, joy, and hope as we welcome all who choose to join this journey of Gospel living.
We thank God for the gift of Covenant Companionship, this blessing in the heart of our world.
Happy Anniversary, Covenant Companions!
