September 2022 Weavings Reflection

This Reflection Has Gone to the Dogs... and Cats... and Birds!Part 1: Wheaton Franciscan Pooches Wheaton Franciscans have a long history of sharing their lives with dear animal and bird companions. Because of Francis's affinity for the natural world and the creatures in it, we thought it would be appropriate to celebrate what has been gleaned from the animals that have graced the homes and lives of Wheaton Franciscans. Please consider these stories of pets that have enhanced the lives of Wheaton Franciscans. The first part focuses on dog companions and next month will have tales of cats and [...]

Nuclear-risk reduction / no-first-use are hot topics at the NPT Review Conference

From Sr. Bea, JPIC:Although the date of this meeting is already past, I share this with you just to let you know that advocacy efforts can make a difference.  Past advocacy work is what made this meeting possible.  As the meeting at the UN of the States Parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty winds down its meeting, some significant progress is being made toward moving all states that presently possess nuclear weapons to agree to sign on to a “no first use” policy. Learn more about the conference.Although this seems like a very small step, it is the first time [...]

Ask Your Senators to Sign On in Support of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Rule Now!

There’s no time to waste in the fight against climate change. This week, heavy rains across the drought-stricken Dallas-Fort Worth area dropped more than 15 inches of rain in under 24 hours. Meanwhile the Colorado River is drying up at its banks and thinning out, as a historic drought shows little sign of abating. These are just two of the impacts of catastrophic climate change. We must do everything in our power to reduce pollution starting… yesterday. The Department of Transportation is ready to take a big step forward and we’re helping them make it happen by generating the support they [...]

President Biden has a chance to finally rein in Louis DeJoy

Dear Sisters, Covenant Members and Friends,Nearly two years after his appointment, the United States Postal Service continues to languish under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s failing leadership. After his appointment by former President Trump, Mr. DeJoy, who favors privatizing the entire postal service, removed many automated sorting machines from many post offices, thus slowing down postal service. Many of these machines were later dismantled, making replacing them very difficult to impossible. Mail delivery continues to be unreliable, with letters sometimes taking 7-10 days to reach their destinations. With many Americans relying on the postal service to pay bills and to deliver [...]

August Anniversary Post

Education Ministry – Early Years Click to Enlarge In her history of the Wheaton Franciscans, Hearts Inflamed, Prudence Moylan writes, “Right from the start the Sisters had to choose, among many opportunities, what work they would do and where they would do it.” There were always more needs than the Sisters were able to meet. They focused their work on the guidance of Mother Clara “to educate children, especially orphans, to care for the sick, poor,” and “any manner of loving service for which the Lord gives them opportunity.” (Founding constitution)  In 1875, Father Theodore [...]

August 2022 Weavings Reflection

A Call To Serveby Naomi Hroncich, Covenant Companion I live in a Retirement Community in Geneva, Illinois. In the early phase of the Pandemic, I realized that many residents lived alone and were isolated from family and friends, and I wanted to do something about that.My experience as a Parish Nurse and Hospice Chaplain with clinical pastoral experience led me to reach out to my fellow independent residents during the different phases of the Pandemic. In September 2020, a proposal was developed and presented to management. A Volunteer Outreach Program was launched and sponsored by the Resident Council. The purpose [...]
