Obituary
Make of yourself a light.
This is a final spiritual blessing that many holy women and men have expressed to their communities as they breathed their finite lives into their original source – the breath of God. And it is one that our blessed Yvonne Wiza leaves with us.
Sister Yvonne Wiza, OSF, was born in Chicago, IL on December 22, 1932 to her mother and father, Grace and Francis Wiza. They named her Phyllis Margaret. She was one of their five children. Her sister Susan Maryann Pawlowski survives. This fine family still shares light on Earth as they do in Heaven. She celebrated her baptism, first communion, and confirmation in Chicagoland parishes and was a Third Order Secular Franciscan at St. Peter’s in Chicago.
She entered the Wheaton Franciscans in 1953, became a novice in 1954, professed her temporary vows in 1956, and professed her final vows in 1959. She ministered as a teacher in Wauconda, IL, Raymond, IA, Pueblo, CO, Colby, WI, and Buffalo Grove, IL. After her teaching career, she continued serving others’ needs in Brazil, Italy, and Wheaton, IL. If there was a need, Yvonne responded with her joyful presence and heartfelt service. Wherever and however the need, Yvonne was present to it. All of her ministries were seasoned with the touches and graces of her artwork.
