Global Solidarity – October 2021

International Solidarity Days-October 2021October 1—International Day for Older PersonsInternational Day for Older Persons is celebrated on October 1st. This day was initiated by the United Nations in 1990 to honor the efforts of the elderly and the value they bring to society.  The theme for this year is “Digital Equality for All Ages.”  We recognize that access to information and participation in digital communication is essential for all ages, but especially for the elderly.  Too often, the elderly find themselves isolated from family and friends due to various physical limitations.  Digital communication, especially at this time of the covid-19 pandemic, [...]

JPIC Office Response to Afghanistan

September 2, 2021 As the US completes its formal military withdrawal from Afghanistan after 20 years of war, we need to reflect on what we have learned.  In his recent encyclical Fratelli Tutti, in paragraph 261, Pope Francis states unequivocally that every war leaves our world worse that it was before.  He urges us to listen to the stories of those who have suffered the violence of war and to look them in the eyes and open our hearts.  Only then can we begin to perceive the abyss of evil at the heart of war.  If we have learned anything [...]

Global Solidarity – September 2021

September 1—World Day of Prayer for CreationSeptember 1st, the World Day of Prayer for Creation, marks the beginning of the 6th annual, world-wide Season of Creation (SOC). Around the world, this season culminates on the feast of St Francis, the patron of ecology, on October 4th.  This year, the theme for the SOC is “A Home For All?— Renewing the Beloved Community of God”.  As we begin this special time of prayer, let us reflect on our common home.  Is the community of creation truly a home for all?  A home is a place of welcome.  Do we extend this [...]

Global Solidarity – August 2021

August 6 and 9—World Remembrance of Hiroshima and Nagasaki—76th AnniversaryThese days are for remembering the only two times that nuclear weapons have been unleashed during warfare. We also remember the horrendous immediate human cost, and the continuing long-term effects on global societies.  These weapons of mass destruction instantly obliterated Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing over 200,000 people, mostly civilians.  Thousands more died in the following months due to burns, radiation sickness and other injuries, compounded by malnutrition and illness.  Many more continued to suffer and die from the long-term effects of radiation exposure over the next 20-40 years.  Since those two [...]

Global Solidarity – July 2021

July 11—World Population DayJuly 11th, World Population Day seeks to raise awareness of issues around world population.  The world’s population has grown from 3 billion in 1960, to 7.9 billion in 2021.  As the world’s population continues to grow, the risks of pandemics increase, and human activities continue to threaten the climate of our planet.  Cooperation across borders, continents and states is necessary if these issues are to be addressed effectively.  Growing human populations require us to creatively address the climate crisis, loss of biodiversity, the need for efficient food production and distribution, and ways to provide access to clean [...]

Global Solidarity – June 2021

June 5—World Environment DayThe theme for World Environment Day 2021 is “Reimagine, Recreate, and Restore” with a focus on stabilizing the earth’s eco-systems.  Human activity and climate change are devastating Earth.  Every 3 seconds, a soccer field-sized patch of forest is lost.  Half of the world’s wetlands have been destroyed over the last century.  We have already lost over 50% of Earth’s coral reefs and the teaming diversity of life that they support. It is predicted that by 2050, over 90% of the coral reefs will be gone.  Ecosystem restoration means preventing, halting, and reversing this damage – to go from [...]

Global Solidarity – May 2021

May 1—International Workers’ Day International Workers’ Day is a special day to honor laborers around the world for their struggle for justice.  The struggles over the years have included demands for an 8-hour working day, with the right to overtime pay for work beyond that, safe working conditions, and end to child labor, the right to organize and form unions, the right to share their concerns with management and employers and the right to job security and sick leave.  Many of these accomplishments in securing modern labor rights were earned after much struggle and determination, often at the risk of [...]

Global Solidarity – April 2021

April 4—International Day of Landmine Awareness & Assistance in Mine ActionThis day is a special day to raise awareness of the dangers posed by landmines and other unexploded munitions.  This is also a day to call on all nations to eliminate the use of landmines.  It is estimated that 15,000-20,000 people are injured or killed each year in areas where war and armed conflict has officially ceased, but where landmines remain an unseen daily danger.  These explosives endanger the lives of farmers planting fields, women walking to fetch water or firewood, and even children at play.  Landmines also make the [...]

Community Response to Recent Shootings

Stop Gun Violence The Wheaton Franciscans condemn the violence in the United States that continues to take innocent lives. In a week that numbs the soul, we recognize that the shooting in Boulder, Colorado, was the seventh mass shooting in seven days resulting in a total of 40 deaths in one week. Gun violence in total takes 40,000 lives per year in the United States. We pray for all of the victims and the families of this senseless violence, yet prayers are not enough. We also implore lawmakers to act courageously and immediately to pass meaningful legislation to control access to [...]

Global Solidarity – March 2021

March 8—International Women’s DayInternational Women's Day (IWD) on March 8 is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. Recognizing that challenge is necessary in bringing about change, the theme for IWD 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge—a challenged world is an alert world!  We are all called to be aware of our gender bias and inequality wherever and whenever we encounter it.  On this day we also seek out and celebrate the achievements of women over the world.  We recognize that women’s contributions to society are [...]
