Our Lady of the Angels Campus
We welcome you to the Wheaton Franciscan Campus. Central to the campus is Our Lady of the Angels Motherhouse, the U.S. headquarters for the Wheaton Franciscans, as well as home to many of the Sisters. The campus is also home to the corporate offices of Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare which serves the needs of our healthcare and housing ministries, Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital which provides inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, and Canticle Place, a 12 unit apartment complex providing affordable housing to persons living with AIDS. Immediately adjacent to the complex is Marian Park, a Wheaton Franciscan sponsored housing development including a five story apartment building for senior housing and townhouses for families.
With so much activity in and around our Motherhouse, we have chosen to create healing "green space" on the campus as a part of our healing ministry. Several acres of the campus have been planed with native Illinois grasses, flanked on two sides by small patches of woodlands. These house several deer, a red fox, hawks, ground hogs and many varieties of birds, butterflies and insects. Our goal is to preserve as much of the remaining green space as possible elsewhere on the campus as well. Plantings of many varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers add a quality of beauty, calm and peace. All of these areas are made accessible to residents, employees and patients by wheel chair accessible "walking" paths that wide their way throughout the property. Enjoying the flowering trees, budding leaves and early flowers of spring, reveling in the warmth and colors of summer, marveling in the displays of fall colors accented across the approaching winter sky, and awakened in new ways by the crisp wind of winter and the blanket of fresh fallen snow coating trees and landscape. - all this brings healing to body, mind and spirit and renews our awareness of our oneness with all of creation. Welcome and Enjoy!
Our Ministries
Our ministries are as diverse as the individual gifts that we each bring to community life. Wheaton Franciscan Sisters serve in individual ministries which include: retreat and renewal work, social services, counseling and spiritual direction, healthcare, pastoral care, congregational/province service, housing, foreign missions and sponsorship.
Sponsorship
We sponsor a large Catholic healthcare and housing system dedicated to service to the poor. Wheaton Franciscan Services, Inc. (WFSI) directs and oversees the future development of these sponsored ministries. Sponsorship is ours to do because:
- Grounded in the example of Clara Pfaender, we are trustees of a tradition of organized service in the Church as an expression of our Franciscan charism and mission.
- Through sponsorship, we intentionally bring a Catholic presence to the public dialogue regarding healthcare and shelter in this country.
- With our ministerial resources, we influence the transformation of healthcare and shelter.
- Sponsorship provides resources for service to the poor and strengthens our voice as their advocates.
- Our history of collaboration allows us to move into the future with confidence.
- Because of our sponsorship, our corporate ministries are characterized by:
- faithfulness to the spirit of mission and values
- integration of ministry and business
- responsiveness to changing needs
- justice and compassion
- development of leadership and staff
- responsible and appropriate participation
- clear and effective communication that considers the minority voice promotion of complementary forms of health and wellness services
- collaboration
- accountability
